July is Dry Eye Disease Awareness Month. Dry eye disease affects approximately 40 million people in the U.S. and fewer than 5% of people with dry eyes have been accurately diagnosed and are being treated.
Dry eye disease is a common, uncomfortable eye condition caused by a lack of tear production or poor quality of tears produced. Typical symptoms can include burning, itching, redness, and excess abnormal tearing. Dry eyes can interfere with contact lens comfort, and cause issues with reading or computer use.
Fortunately, since dry eye disease is so common, there are a number of methods to succesfully treat the problem. These include eye drops, nutritional supplements, lifestyle modifications, and simple in-office procedures.
If you've been experiencing dry eye symptoms, call the office and schedule a complete eye exam, including a dry eye evaluation.
Our office is now the first Accredited Dry Eye Center in Northern New Jersey. This means that we have specialized testing in place to quantify exactly how dry your eyes are, which helps with diagnosis of dry eyes, as well as management over time.
